Anti Wrinkle Injection

Anti-wrinkle injections are basically the injections made of a protein called Botulinum toxin that works by blocking the connection between the nerve and the muscle cell.

So, if the nerve can’t communicate with the muscle, the muscle will not contract and you can’t have the wrinkles any more as the skin wrinkles happen due to muscle contraction.

Treatments usually take around 15 to 30 minutes with results starting within 3-5 days. The maximum effect of the injections will be noticed by 2 weeks. The effect of the Botulinum toxin lasts for 3-4 months, as after that your muscles and nerves make new communication pathways to get around this block of Botulinum toxin.

Everyone is different when it comes to anti-wrinkle injections. The larger the area, the stronger the muscles and the more units of anti-wrinkle injection it needs. Men often need 1.5-2 times the dose of botulinum toxin injections as compared to women for the same area.

Anti-wrinkle injections is considered a prophylactic treatment for ageing. Relaxing the facial muscles with anti-wrinkle injections means, you are reducing excessive crumpling of the skin by reducing the tone of contraction of the muscles which helps your skin recover over a period of months to years. Starting Anti-wrinkle treatment early in life means you can keep the facial muscle tone low and it will delay the formation of wrinkles. For the majority of people, starting smaller doses of anti-wrinkle injections in their late 20s or early 30s is ideal for preventative purposes. If areas are left untreated, it becomes harder to get rid of deep-set lines in your 40s and 50s.

Anti-wrinkle injection treatment can be combined with other modalities like dermal fillers or Radiofrequency microneedling as a combination approach for skin rejuvenation.

Anti-Ageing Treatment

Ageing is classified into Intrinsic and Extrinsic Ageing.

Intrinsic or Chronological Ageing is natural degeneration in the skin which happens naturally due to declining physiological functions in the skin as we grow old. This includes diminished or defective synthesis of collagen and elastin in the dermal layer of the skin, and diminished blood supply to the skin with resulting less nutrient support and increased pallor of the skin.

Extrinsic ageing is the decline in skin health which is caused by external factors like Ultraviolet radiations, Cigarette smoking, Air pollution etc. Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight is the most important cause, and so extrinsic ageing is often referred to as photoageing.

Anti-ageing treatment is basically a management plan focused to slow down the skin ageing and also to reverse the established signs of ageing by inducing remodelling of the skin and synthesis of collagen to improve strength of the skin.

The anti-ageing management plan is different for everybody depending on the extent of photo-ageing and other signs of ageing which includes wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation marks, vascular lesions and other skin changes.

If you are looking for anti-ageing treatment in the Hunter Valley or Maitland area, Please book a cosmetic consultation with one of our doctors and our doctors will create an anti-ageing management plan unique for your skin based on a thorough assessment of your skin.

Elixir @ Hunter skin cancer clinic is a doctor led cosmetic and skin cancer clinic, and we will ensure that you get a personalised approach to your treatment so that you get your desired results.

A few ways of anti-ageing treatments done at our clinic are

  • Use of Anti-wrinkle botulinum toxin injections to relax the facial muscles. Anti-wrinkle injection treatment can be combined with other modalities like dermal fillers or RF microneedling as a combination approach for skin rejuvenation. As there is no downtime in this procedure, you can go back to your normal routine and life with no interruptions.
  • Use of dermal filler injections to replace the lost volume which happens with ageing. Dermal fillers not only helps in replacing the lost volume, but also helps in improving hydration of the skin and underlying tissues, triggers remodelling of the skin and triggers synthesis of the collagen depending on the technique of the injection.
  • Radiofrequency microneedling is an effective intervention for skin rejuvenation that can be used repeatedly and safely in combination with other treatment modalities and in individuals with all skin phototypes. This procedure creates mini perforation in the skin and delivers radiofrequency generated thermal energy into the skin triggering dermal remodelling and neocollagenesis. The effect is slow and progressive but it can be used repeatedly and safely, and that way the collagen synthesis continues to improve even 6 months after treatment. It helps to improve the sagging facial skin, improve fine lines and wrinkles, improve acne scarring, improves skin texture and skin physiology.
  • IPL or Intense Pulsed Light can be used to target the fine capillaries, freckles and pigmentation which can develop as part of the photo-ageing. IPL uses the light technology to reduce pigmentation and reddish areas of hypervascularity, improve complexion, improve skin laxity and wrinkling, and improve collagen production.
  • Fractional ablation of the skin using Fractional Co2 laser to refine wrinkles and regenerate your collagen and elastin fibres. The Co2 laser targets water in the skin and the fractional technology creates microchannels of skin perforation leaving areas of the intervening skin unaffected, thus creating a limited and controlled trauma which triggers regeneration of collagen and elastin.

Common Treatment Areas

Forehead Lines

The lines on the forehead are lines of attentiveness, which are formed when a person listens or shows interest or sympathy. Forehead lines have a negative effect only when they are deep. These lines are produced by contraction of the muscle called ‘frontalis’. Deep forehead lines can make you look older and more tired than you are. Treatments to smooth this area can make a dramatic difference to facial aesthetics.Very good treatment results can be expected in patients who can produce or diminish the horizontal lines by voluntary muscle contraction and relaxation.

Frown Lines

The frown lines are the most telling components of human facial expression. Prominent lines in the glabellar region give off a negative signal regardless of an individual’s actual mood. These lines are located between the eyebrows, and they become more prominent when you frown, making many of you look angry or sad. Overtime, these lines may become deep and stay even at rest, making you look like you’re frowning even when you’re not.Very good results can be expected in patients who can manage to produce frown lines voluntarily. Treatment of frown lines is one of the primary indications of botulinum toxin treatment. A more long term treatment may lead to a more successful outcome.

Chemical Brow Lift

Eyebrows are key facial landmarks, and their colour, position, curvature and thickness dictates the aesthetics of the upper face significantly. Low set brows communicate a tired expression, whereas high set eyebrows make the face appear fresher, younger and more alert. One of the phenomena that occurs as part of the normal ageing processes in the forehead is sinking of the brows and loss of eyebrow arch. Individuals who can raise their eyebrows voluntarily and actively to a relevant extent benefit most from the treatment.

Crow’s Feet or Lateral Canthal Lines

The area around the eyes is one of the most interesting parts of the face. People communicate with their eyes, allowing us to interpret their feelings.
Crow’s feet are wrinkles at the sides of the eyes. These wrinkles occur to all of us overtime, and are caused by repeated facial muscle movements when we smile or laugh. These lines can make us look older or more tired than we really are. Anti-wrinkle injections act to soften the lines around this area leaving you with a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.

Fine skin creases on the lower eyelid

The area under the eyes can get fine lines from the activity of the underlying muscles as part of the ageing. The area of skin around the eyes is very thin with very little soft tissue support of fat under the skin, and so, this is one of the first areas of the face to display signs of ageing. Some of the predisposing factors for these lines include a habit of blinking or squinting into very bright light, and some external factors like living in a cold and windy place, and nicotine smoking.Younger patients with a good elasticity in the skin of the lower eyelid benefit most from this treatment.

Bunny lines

Bunny lines are fine wrinkles of varying depth on the upper and outer sides of the wings of the nose. They usually become more prominent with laughing and smiling. These lines may also get more prominent following treatment of the frown lines, due to compensatory activation when blinking or squinting of the eyes. These lines can be treated satisfactorily with very low doses of botulinum toxin injection.

Gummy Smile

Gummy smile is a phenomenon that when some people smile, their upper lip elevates too far above their upper teeth, exposing gums and producing an unattractive smile. One of the causes is hyperactive muscle which elevates the upper lip. Occasionally, the gummy smile is also aggravated by a thin upper lip that further contributes to the problem by exposing the upper gum even more. A low dose of botulinum injection can help to reduce the gummy smile.

Perioral radial lines

Perioral lines are fine wrinkles and lines on the upper and/or lower lip that radiate out from the red lip border caused by the contraction of the underlying muscle. The fat layer under the skin in the upper lip is very thin and so, this area is prone to get fine lines and wrinkles from contraction of the underlying lip muscles which are in close contact with the skin. These lines can be treated in several ways and the best results often come from the combination of treatments. If the lines are early in their development, and are visible only when the perioral muscles contract and purse the lips, relaxation of the perioral muscles with botulinum toxin injection can be used. Botulinum toxin, Dermal fillers, Radiofrequency microneedling and laser resurfacing can all be combined to give a better result, depending on the patient’s needs.

Downturned corners of the mouth

Drooping at the corners of the mouth is one of the most powerful negative messages communicated by the face. Downturned corners of the mouth are caused by overactivity of the muscle ‘Depressor Anguli Oris’ which happens as part of the changes happening with ageing creating a downturning of the outer portions of our mouth. Relaxing this muscle with the botulinum toxin injection provides a more aesthetically pleasing mouth position at rest.

Cobblestone chin

Dimpling of the skin around the chin area results from repeated contractions of the mentalis (chin muscle). A low dose of botulinum toxin injection can be used to improve the dimpling of the chin.

Slimming of the face

The repetitive and subconscious contraction of the muscles of mastication (Masseter) can create hypertrophy of these muscles and can create prominence at the angle of the jaw. The same process also creates bruxism or grinding of teeth while sleeping. When Bruxism occurs on a regular basis, typically during sleep, it can lead to damage to dental health and can cause complications. Hypertrophy of the masseter muscle occurs frequently in men leading to the characteristic appearance of a massive, edged mandible.Botulinum toxin injections into the Masseter muscle can be used to reduce the width of the jawline, creating slimming of the face. This injection als leads to improvement in bruxism or grinding of teeth. Botulinum toxin can reduce the overall size of the masseter muscle, allowing for improved facial proportions.

Neck bands

The skin changes with ageing creates horizontal wrinkling in the neck and decolletage area. Furthermore, age related changes in Platysma (the main muscle of the neck) manifest in the form of vertical cords or bands. They stand out prominently when the muscles of facial expression are used, like when speaking, and may impair a person’s overall aesthetic appearance.Years of overactivity can cause permanent neck banding, making your neck look old and tired. Relaxing this area with anti-wrinkle injections can improve the restoring a youthful lower face contour. This technique involves placing multiple injections of the botulinum toxin horizontally along the lower jawline and vertically down the side of the neck along the platysmal band muscles. These bands are what pull down on the lower side of the face and aggravate the jowls. The effect is to improve the definition of the jawline, relax the jowls, and provide an ‘upward lifting effect’ in the neck and jaw area.

Primary Hyperhidrosis

Many people have problems with excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) in the underarms, hairline, under breasts, forehead, hands or feet. Hyperhidrosis can affect people of any age, physical condition or gender. Hyperhidrosis or Excessive sweating can be quite inconvenient, plus it can be quite embarrassing at times. Excessive sweating due to anxiety during a presentation or in a meeting creating stains on your shirt or having sweaty palms when you’re nervous, or feeling your shoes fill with smelly sweat doesn’t exactly make you feel comfortable. Aside from unsightly sweat marks which can cause extreme embarrassment to the sufferer by giving a false impression of poor hygiene, it can also lead to itchy skin creating secondary dermatitis or certain infections like Tinea. Trying to be your best, most confident and vibrant self can be tricky when you’re too busy worrying if everyone’s noticed you’re dripping in sweat.

excessive sweating Hyperhidrosis

The botulinum toxin injections can break or interrupt the communication between nerves and sweat glands resulting in less to no sweating in the treated area. If your excessive-perspiration is leading to a bit of social anxiety, this treatment could be ideal for you. Small doses of Botulinum toxin are injected into the skin blocking nerve supply to the apocrine sweat glands and preventing the glands from producing sweat.

excessive sweating Hyperhidrosis

This doesn’t cure hyperhidrosis but provides temporary relief and needs to be repeated every five to six months for maximum effect. Botox is only effective in treating small areas and is therefore not a viable option for or treating generalised hyperhidrosis. It can take up to a week for the Botox to start working properly so it is important not to expect a miraculous disappearance right away. It is important to avoid massaging the area or putting pressure on the injection site for a few days, and to avoid strenuous activity and deodorant the same day as treatment. The site may be a little painful and small bruises can form, but these symptoms go away within a day or two. Sweat gland blocking injections to areas of problematic excessive sweating takes around 30-45 minutes, and the effect can last around 6 to 12 months. It has been shown that repetitive therapy with botulinum toxin injections results in a significant reduction in perspiration and improved quality of life.

What are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Anti-Wrinkle Injections consist of a purified version of a naturally occurring protein. When injected into “wrinkle-causing” muscles, these proteins work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to the muscle. This controlled weakening reduces muscle movement, causing the wrinkles over the muscles to become smooth and disappear. They have been safely used for over 30 years on over 100 million patients.

How long does anti-wrinkle injection take to work?

Anti-wrinkle injections take anywhere from 7 days to 2 weeks to take effect, and the effect usually lasts 3-6 months. If you have some important function coming up and you want to have the anti-wrinkle injection for the function, it is advisable to have the treatment 4-6 weeks before the date in question. This will allow you to get used to the product and allow time to do any top ups or make any necessary changes.

Why do wrinkles appear?

Wrinkles appear over time because of persistent tension in the small muscles of facial expression. Contraction of these muscles causes the skin to bunch up over the muscle, causing wrinkles.

Who can perform Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

In Australia, only a doctor or registered nurse under the supervision of a medical doctor may inject muscle relaxants and most dermal fillers. For a safe treatment and optimum results, only a fully trained, highly experienced practitioner should administer cosmetic injections.

What is a good age to start anti-wrinkle injections?

Most patients start Anti-Wrinkle injections in their late 20s or early 30s. This reduces or delays the formation of lines. Some patients start earlier, but this is for aesthetic reasons rather than anti-ageing. Treating the frown lines also stops squinting when in outdoor photos. Other reasons patients may start young include:

  • Brow lift- augments the shape of the brow
  • DAO- decreases downturned corners of mouth
  • Gummy smile- reduces the show of gums when smiling.

If you stop, your face will return to as it was prior to starting Anti-Wrinkle injections. It will not cause facial sagging or drooping. Those who diligently continue to use Anti-Wrinkle injections will notice their wrinkles stay soft, or will never form at all.

What age should you stop getting Anti-Wrinkle treatments?

There is no age limit for Anti-Wrinkle Injections. However, as we age (particularly after the age of 55) our brow and upper eyelid region can get heavier. Excessive use of Anti-Wrinkle Injections in these regions can cause an already heavy brow and upper eye area to droop. A comprehensive facial assessment prior to injections is especially important in older patients. In expert hands, these patients can be treated successfully, but extra caution needs to be exercised to prevent facial heaviness.

How much do Anti-Wrinkle Injections cost?

It depends on the number of units injected. The number of units required depends on the strength of the muscles involved in creating your wrinkles. Each unit at Elixir is charged at $12 per unit. The price per unit varies depending on the clinic and a consultation with our doctors to assess the number of units required for each patient.

The number of units required for males can increase by up to 25-50% due to the stronger facial muscles. For a forehead you need anywhere from 8 to 20 units costing you anywhere from $80-360 depending on the clinic, and strength of your muscles. Pricing for male patients is usually 25-50% more expensive, as their facial muscles are much stronger.

How long do Anti-Wrinkle Injections last?

Results from anti-wrinkle injections can last between 3-4 months. Those who have treatments regularly may find they can go longer durations between treatments, often up to 6 to 12 months.

If you decide that Anti-Wrinkle injections are not your best treatment, you can rest assured knowing that the treated area will gradually return to its pre-treatment appearance.

Will the treatments hurt?

Patients report minor to no discomfort during anti-wrinkle injections. Treatments themselves take a matter of minutes, and we practice all available injection techniques to reduce discomfort. Our clinics use ultra-thin needles to decrease any discomfort you may experience during treatments. If required, a topical anaesthetic can be used to numb the skin prior to the injection process. The numbing process takes 30 mins in total and will require you to attend your appointment 30 minutes early.

Will anyone know I’ve had Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

We inject the minimum amount required to give a pleasantly aesthetic result without giving a frozen appearance. Anti-Wrinkle Injections work over 3-10 days and results occurring slowly and subtly. People may realise you look more refreshed or “less-tired” without knowing why.

How can I ensure the longest lasting results?

There are three important considerations:

  • Expertise of injector
    • Intimate knowledge of facial anatomy is essential. Expertly placed injections can ensure no wasted units and that complications are kept to a minimum.
  • Dosage requirements
    • Overdosing can cause heaviness and increased risk of complications.
    • Under-dosing can cause a poor cosmetic results and short-lived results.
    • Dosing depends on the strength of the muscle and should be individualised for each patient. There is no one-size-fits-all.
  • Brand of Anti-Wrinkle
    • There are three brands in Australia approved by the TGA for Anti-Wrinkle treatments. These brands vary significantly in price and at Elixir you are treated with only premium products. Some clinics push inferior products to improve their profits. Ensure you are treated with only premium products.
When will I see results?

Depending on the product used it can take 2-5 days to see results from Anti-Wrinkle treatments. Full results are noticeable in 2 weeks.

What is the downtime of Anti-Wrinkle treatments?

This is a lunchtime no-downtime procedure. It is done in the clinic in less than 15 minutes. You are able to return to your daily routine immediately after treatments without anyone knowing you have had anything done.

Can you get Anti-Wrinkle treatments and fillers on the same day?

The short answer is yes. Although, there are certain areas of the face where caution needs to be exercised. Filler can cause swelling in the treated area. Swelling can increase the risk of the anti-wrinkle product travelling to an undesirable place. This can increase the risk of complications such as brow or eyelid drooping.

Provided the filler is not placed in the same area as the Anti-Wrinkle Injection, there should be no issue having them done on the same day.

There may be occasions when your injector may suggest waiting 2 weeks between anti-wrinkle and dermal filler treatments. This will be discussed with you on the day of consultation.

What are the potential side effects?

Side effects are rare with this type of treatment. The injections are superficial and there is no absorption into the bloodstream. Immediately afterwards, minor side effects such as redness, swelling, and itching are common. These rarely last more than minutes to hours. These effects do not prevent patients from returning to work and other normal activities immediately after leaving our office. Uncommonly patients may experience short-lived side effects including:

  • Bruising is usually minimal and lasts anywhere from 1-4 days. It is easily covered with makeup.
  • Eyelid drooping “Ptosis” is rare and lasts 3 weeks. It is prevented by proper injection technique, and adherence to aftercare instructions. In the rare case this does occur, eye drops may be prescribed.
Who can NOT have Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Most average adults with good health records are suitable for the procedure. There are exceptions which includes:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Many women have inadvertently used anti-wrinkle injections during pregnancy with no reported adverse effects. However, currently there are no established safety data on their use in pregnancy or lactation.
  • Neuromuscular disorders such as Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome.
  • Those with previous allergies to Anti-Wrinkle Injections.
What should you not do after having Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Where the product is injected is where you want it to stay. The following instructions are to decrease the risk of the Anti-Wrinkle product moving south and causing drooping brows/eyelids or ending in a poor cosmetic result. These are some general rules post anti-wrinkle injections:

  • Avoid rubbing or massaging treated areas for 5 days. Gently cleansing is fine.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption on the day of treatment.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours.
  • Avoid laying flat for 4 hours post treatment.
  • Avoid facial treatments including lasers, peels, needling, waxing for one-week post treatment.
How long after Anti-Wrinkle Injections can I wash my face?

You can gently wash your face immediately after treatment.

The key here is to be gentle and and to avoid massage or direct facial pressure.

When can I wear make-up after Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

You may apply make-up the day after your treatment. This is to allow healing of the tiny pin points caused by the Anti-Wrinkle Injections.

Applying makeup earlier than this can increase your risk of infection post treatment.

Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections toxic to the body?

At doses provided in cosmetic medicine, No. These are safe in small doses.

The same product used in cosmetics is used in relaxing contracted muscles, for example in a child with Cerebral palsy. Children as young as 2 often receive doses 20-50 times that one would receive in a usual cosmetic facial treatment.

This shows the safety of anti-wrinkle injections when used in cosmetic doses.

What happens as Anti-Wrinkle Injections begin to wear off?

The results of Anti-Wrinkle Injections generally last 3-4 months. As its effects wear off, the skin will return to its natural, pre-treatment state. If you decide against further injections, your skin will be left in the same condition it was before treatment; it will not be any more wrinkled than it was before treatment.

Will I still be able to make facial expressions?

One of the worries many patients express is that the injections will make it impossible for them to move their faces. While muscle relaxants do relax the muscle activity which causes wrinkles, when used correctly they should not affect your ability to frown, look surprised, and make other facial movements. When overdone, muscle relaxants do have a tendency to cause a frozen appearance.

At Elixir Hunter, our medical professionals are skilled at using the right amount of product. You will not look as though you’ve had “work done” and will still be able to move your facial muscles.

Is there anything I should avoid after Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Anti Wrinkle Injections are a quick and safe procedure that has little impact on your usual daily activity post treatment. However, to allow anti-wrinkle injections to work optimally in the target muscles, the following precautions are suggested:

  • No rubbing or massage of treated areas for at least 48 hours.
  • No strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatments.
  • Keep upright for 4 hours post treatment.
  • Avoid tightly fitted headwear within 24 hours of treatment.
  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and excessive alcohol before and within 24 hours of the treatment to decrease the risk of bruising.
Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections just for women?

No. Many men have also benefited from these treatments. Our male patients frequently request muscle relaxant or dermal filler injections on their forehead, between their brows, and on other areas of their face they feel make them look older or more tired than they really are.
